How do my child’s lifestyle choices affect their education?

Your child’s home life and the decisions they make in terms of their lifestyle will have a knock-on effect on their education. For instance, if they stay up all night playing video games, they will struggle to concentrate at school the next day. As a parent, it’s your job to make sure your child is making sensible lifestyle choices so that they can perform well in school. Read on for more information from a private school in Ireland.

Healthy eating

It would be wise to ensure your child starts each day with a filling and nutritious breakfast, as this will give them fuel for the day. If they grab a quick snack rather than eating a decent breakfast, they will likely feel sluggish at school after no time at all. As a result, they won’t feel as engaged in lessons.

Generally speaking, sugary snacks and junk food lead to a temporary high and a subsequent crash, but a healthy meal gives you energy for longer. With this in mind, send your child with fresh fruit and vegetables, like carrot sticks with hummus, rather than a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar.

Regular exercise

You also need to make sure your child is getting enough exercise. Most children would happily spend all day glued to their phones and other digital devices, but that is neither healthy, nor good for their learning. Try and find ways to encourage your child to be more active with the following ideas:

  • Ask them to take the dog for a walk each evening
  • Offer to play tag/catch or another active game after school
  • Encourage them to join an extra-curricular activity, like sport or drama
  • Park further away from school so your child has to walk a short distance each day
  • Take your child swimming at the weekend

Exercise is great for improving brain function, which can help children focus on their learning. What’s more, it energises them and puts them in a better mood.

Sleep

As mentioned above, staying up all night is a bad idea for people who have work or school the next day. Make sure your child sticks to a regular bedtime to ensure they are getting around 8-hours of sleep each night. As a result, they should find it easier to pay attention in class.
