Regular reading and storytelling with your child has a range of astonishing benefits, and it’s never too early to start. You might not think to read to a young baby because they don’t yet understand but doing so is great for helping them become familiar with the rhythm of language. I have teamed up with a private school in Cardiff to explore the importance of reading for children in further detail.

1. Improves general knowledge

Books explore a range of topics, giving children the opportunity to learn about things outside of their little bubble. For instance, they might read about historical events or places they have never visited, so it helps them with their understanding of the world around them. It’s great for children to explore different interests and learn outside of a traditional classroom environment.

2. Enhances spelling and grammar

Children who have regular exposure to books are able to learn new words and develop their spelling and grammar skills. This is a fantastic way to enhance their academic progress, because literacy skills are important in school. So, when reading with your child, don’t be afraid to pause and ask them if they know what certain words mean. 

3. Stimulates the brain and improves concentration

Reading is a fairly complex task for the human brain, more so than watching TV, for example. This is great for improving brain function and also helps children with their ability to concentrate. Again, this is something that will benefit them throughout their education.

4. Encourages empathy

When children read about characters who have different experiences to their own, they learn to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. They start to become aware of the fact that not everyone has the same beliefs or opinions, which helps them empathise with and respect others.
