Parenting hacks for raising siblings under one roof

Raising siblings under one roof isn’t always easy – it’s rewarding, of course, and wonderful, but it’s also a big challenge, and the fact is that creating a harmonious household takes a lot of hard work, and plenty of patience. The good news is there are some things you can do to make it easier, and no matter if your kids are fighting one minute and best friends the best, all these tips will be useful, so keep reading to find out more.

1. Create personal spaces

When siblings share a room, personal space might not seem possible, and unless you want to move home to give everyone their own room, that’s just something that might have to be sacrificed, right? Well, not necessarily. And it’s important to work out ways to do it because even if you are short of square footage, it’s crucial to carve out areas that each child can call their own – just think of how it would be if you didn’t have somewhere to retreat to when you needed some time and space. Your children will feel the same.

Something that can really help is to invest in kids bunk beds, for example, especially if you can add some curtains or some other kind of divider to give each child their own space and privacy. A few personal touches like fairy lights, posters, favorite toys, and so on, can also help massively to make their own space, even if it’s just the size of a single bed, feel special.

2. Use teamwork

Sibling rivalry is a real thing, and it’s something you’re probably trying to deal with right now – being a parent and a referee is always a tricky job, and it’s exhausting for everyone involved. At some point, your kids will grow up enough to stop all the fighting and bickering, and hopefully they’ll become friends (or at least tolerate one another), but right now that might feel like a long way off, so what can you do?

You can actually use that sibling rivalry and turn it into teamwork, and you can set them on the right track earlier than they’d otherwise do. In other words, give them joint responsibilities around the house, like setting the table or tidying their room, and make sure you praise them when they work well together. They’ll soon learn it’s better to work together rather than to argue all the time, and that’s going to give you a much more peaceful household.

3. Give them one-on-one time

Group activities are fantastic, and they’re a brilliant way to create memories your children are going to feel fondly about for many years to come, but what’s also important is to give each child individual attention so they can all feel seen and heard and don’t always feel like they have to compete with the others.

It doesn’t have to be something big – a trip to the park, going to soft play, a quick chat before bed, a ‘date’ at a cafe for a hot chocolate and cake, and so on – but make sure you do it regularly and evenly so everyone gets the chance to spend time with just you. That’s going to strengthen your bond and it’s the perfect chance to make sure everything is fine in your kids’ worlds.
