Healthy home changes that will benefit your family

Feel like your home is a little less functional than you’d like? That’s no good for your health! When raising a family, you need the four walls you live in to nurture your kids as they grow. The easier it is to feel good within your house, the happier you’re going to be living there. And with just a few small changes, your home can become ten times healthier than ever before. Here are some good ways to get started…

Use a white noise machine

White noise machines are great for just giving you a bit of background sound. For parents with babies and toddlers, this is the kind of change that’ll keep things a bit quieter and calmer! And if you’re always finding the silence of the day a little deafening, putting on some background noise to help you focus and think is the way forward. It’s nothing too loud or overbearing – it can just drown out the mundanity and make your home more comfortable to be in.

Filter your tap water

Filtered tap water is always a safe choice. If you live in an older home where the plumbing is on the fritz, or you live in an area where the water type is a little harder or softer than you’d really like, use a water filter to make a healthy change. You’re likely to find that any water poured out of the jug tastes a lot cleaner; there can be a nasty chemical taste left over in tap water, depending on the concentration of the mixture used to ensure it’s potable and fit for families.

Focus on recyclable materials

Using primarily recyclable materials makes it a lot easier to sort waste on bin day, and it’s just better for the environment overall. If you can, buy glass cups and dishes more than their plastic counterparts, and upcycle as much as possible when something doesn’t serve its original function anymore. When it comes to personal care, opt for refillable skin and hair care products. Make art out of some old food containers, use that nasty yellowed tupperware as a storage pot in the garage, chop up that broken chair and make shelves out of the wood, etc.

Pull moisture out of the air

The more moisture in the air of your home, the harder it’s going to be to keep mold at arm’s length! And there’s going to be quite a few chances for mold to grow already, so you’ll want to keep the moisture content to a minimum. To do this, use a dehumidifier around once a week and make sure you always use the exhaust fan when using the bathroom and kitchen. Turning these on can save you a headache in a few months’ time, and you’ll definitely thank yourself for remembering!

Some changes to your home can be very healthy, even if they don’t feel quite as impactful at the time. Do things like these first and roll your efforts from there; even just one change can improve form and function within your four walls.
