Cake decorating ideas for Halloween
Halloween is just around the corner and it’s time to start planning your spooky family celebration. And what better way to enjoy than with a cake that represents this spooky holiday? Whether you’re planning to make a traditional pumpkin spice cake or an ice cream cake, there are many ways to decorate them for Halloween. This blog post will show you how to make your cake look like a real spider web is on it (ugh!!!), by using frosting and candy sprinkles.
Hosting a Halloween party is stressful enough. So, when it comes to the cake my advice would be – keep it simple. Just make a basic sponge which can then be baked as a whole cake, or alternatively, as cupcakes. After all, it’s all about the decoration!!!
The Spider Web Cake
One of the simplest Halloween cakes you can make is the Spider’s Web. It is super easy and simply involves icing your sponge or cupcakes with white icing and then using some black icing to create the ‘web’ with concentric (but joined) circles. When you’ve finished icing the web, use some white sugar paste or royal icing to add on ‘dangling’ strands of a spiders web.

Ghost Cake/Cupcakes
To create a ghost cake or cupcakes that are perfect for Halloween, all you need is an ice cream cone and some black food colouring (gel colours work best). Ice out your cake/ cupcakes with vanilla icing and then put on your ghost cone/s. You can make the eyes, mouth and buttons with some food colouring gel or you could simply dust it in cocoa powder.
Spooky cupcakes
Cupcakes are very popular at this time of year and if you’re looking for inspiration then why not search the internet for Halloween-themed ones to give you some ideas? Alternatively, there’s nothing stopping you from creating your own.

One of the most popular designs at this time of year is a Halloween Cupcake Tree. To create one you simply need to stack your cakes on top of each other and then use some chocolate bark or melted chocolate to ‘glue’ them together. If you’re looking for an alternative, try creating hanging bats out of fruit pastilles and then hanging them from the trees.
For a really spooky design, you could try creating a Graveyard Cupcake Cake by stacking your cakes into a grave shape and using some icing, chocolates or marshmallows to create tombstones.
In essence, let your imagination run wild! Or, for some inspiration and ideas, check out the designs that London-based bakes Anges-de-Sucre do; you’ll be spoilt for choice with their range of awesome designs!
Make your own Halloween cupcake cases
If you’re feeling really creative then why not try making your own Halloween themed cupcake cases too? All that’s required is baking up some white sponges either with or without cocoa depending on your preference and then cutting out your stencils. You can use a Halloween-themed punch cutter to create the eyes, mouths and noses but you could just as easily use some cutters in the shape of pumpkins or witches’ hats (or any other shapes that take your fancy!).
Once you’ve filled them with cake mix simply pop on your lids and there you have a spooky cupcake case! For maximum effect, dust your cakes with some edible glitter or silver sugar.
