Top tips for protecting your home against cracks and leaks this winter

protecting your house

As a homeowner, you’ll probably experience cracked walls or a leaky basement or ceiling at some point in your life. They are frustrating and if you don’t get to the root cause of the problem fairly quickly, they could lead to more costly repairs later down the line. Here are some top tips to help you avoid pesky cracks and leaks this winter.

1. Check your guttering

Checking your guttering isn’t probably something you think about doing very often, if at all, but it’s important to do so as they can cause a whole host of problems if they become blocked or damaged. If your pipes are starting to look aged, it might be worth getting them replaced.

2. Check the roof

Again, assessing the condition of your roof is probably not a top priority, but if your roof tiles become damaged or fall off, you can end up with leaks. If you don’t feel comfortable checking the roof yourself, perhaps consider hiring a professional.

3. Protect your building foundations

When the ground around your property becomes too dry, the soil shrinks and your foundations can shift into the newfound gap, which causes cracks and leaks in the property above. Likewise, in winter when it rains and the soil becomes too moist, it expands and can put pressure on the foundations, leading to similar issues. With that said, make sure you have adequate drainage during winter. And make sure you keep an eye on your building foundations from time to time.

4. Fix your windows

Check the seals around your window and use caulk to fill in any gaps. This will ensure the windowpanes stay in place and limit the amount of moisture entering your home.

Your home is likely one of the most expensive investments you’ll ever make, so it’s important to take care of it as best you can. In doing so, you should be able to keep it looking and feeling as beautiful as the day it was first built.
