Love is in the air (or is it?)

Come February, and hearts, flowers and everything red jumps out at you, because Cupid’s Day is just around the corner. But for me, Valentine’s Day is

a) over-hyped

b) over-consumerised and

c) under-rated… for Mums!

Because while lovers/couples without children will wake up to heart-shaped balloons/ red roses/ breakfast in bed or even sex, mums will still wake up to be woken up by a poke in the eye or a fart in the face. There will still be bums to clean, and protesting mouths to feed. V-Day will be just like any other day in the life of a Mum. So… in honour of all us Mums, I’ve penned a parody (to be sung to the tune of Love is in the Air by John Paul Young) for this oh-so-not-special day…

Love is in the air,
But you know I really don’t care…
For have you even seen
The dishevelled state of my greying hair?

Love is in the air
It’s roses and hearts everywhere
No, not for me
It’s runny noses and farts I see there

Love is in the air
Romantic dinner? But what the hell do I wear?
That red dress
Really makes me look like a pear

Love is in the air
Love is in the air
Oh,oh,oh, oh, uh

Love is in the air
Forget parenting for a day… can I dare?
But then who will teach my kid
That it’s good to share?

Love is in the air
But I’ve got to stick around in my lair
Lots to do you know
As dishes and laundry piles give me the stare

Love is in the air
Maybe some sex that’s now so rare
Who am I kidding
Don’t want to give hubster a scare

Love is in the air
Love is in the air
Oh,oh,oh, oh, uh

Love is in the air
Oh yes, it is everywhere…
In my son’s cuddles
Yes I feel it right there…

Love is in the air
It’s a love like none before I swear
Being a mum is great
Despite all the wear and tear…

Love is in the air
Love is in the air
Oh,oh,oh, oh, uh…

  1. Clare

Love the poem. Oh so true! I would love to have a valentines day where it was actually romantic for a change!

    1. Nicole

      Thank you:)
Just checked out your blog… love it! Fun stuff!
      Thanks for popping over!

  2. Tina Shroff

    Hahaha. Awesome one Nicole.

    1. Nicole

      Thanks love:) Bet you agree;)

  3. Jaclyn Bree

This will be my second mommy valentine’s day. To be honest, I don’t remember the first one at all. I don’t think it was remarked upon at all. Which is fine by me. I find valentine’s day two be one of those days that is really only for people with spending money (not us) or who can afford a day off work (again, not us).
    Love the song 🙂

    1. Nicole

Thanks for popping over! Yes, as mums V-day takes a completely different turn, doesn’t it? Enjoy it anyways:)

  4. Kirsty - Winnettes

This is so true! I can’t stand valentines day, I have never really seen the point in it. I’m not sure anything will make me change my mind. I already know this year will pass by like any other day, which for me is exactly how it should be.

    1. Nicole

      Thanks for reading!!!

  5. Sharin Butani

Just what i think every year around Valentine’s. You penned my thoughts, Nicole. Hope this Valentine ends up differently…just hope!

    1. Nicole

      Fingers crossed;)

  6. The Tale of Mummyhood

Ah I love this, it’s so true that our children are all the love we need! Although, a box of choccies wouldn’t go a miss, haha! Thanks so much for linking up to #Blogstravaganza xx

    1. Nicole

I agree with you on the box of chocolates! How can one say no to choccies?;)

  7. Rice Cakes and Raisins

Haha I love the line about runny noses and farts! That about sums up the romance in our household #DreamTeam

    1. Nicole

Lol. It is all about that with kids, isn’t it?! Thanks for reading…

  8. Talya

Literally laughed out loud and almost spat my soup all over my computer at this:

     Love is in the air
Maybe some sex that's now so rare
    Who am I kidding
Don't want to give hubster a scare

Genius – thanks for linking up to #coolmumclub lovely xoxo

    1. Nicole

  9. Emma Island Living 365

LOVED THIS! Genius. Bloody Valentine's Day, as if we don't have enough to worry about. I am happy to hang around in my lair and just eat all of the chocolate! #FridayFrolics

    1. Nicole

Thank you! Completely agree with you

  10. Annette, 3 Little Buttons

LOL that's so funny. I can't get the song out of my head now. V-day is a touch over-rated… but having said that, it's easy for mums to say that as we get showered with unconditional love every day from our littles. Fab! Thanks so much for sharing with the #dreamteam x

    1. Nicole

True… those spontaneous cuddles and 'I Love Yous' are priceless. Though a little chocolate and a lie-in wouldn't hurt;)

  11. Claire - Life, Love and Dirty Dishes

Brilliant.  Love is in the air, or that could just be my son needs his nappy changed!  Thanks for linking up to #FridayFrolics

    1. Nicole

      Hahaha, that’s hilarious Kate:)

  18. Jaki

So I’m not going to be able to hear this song in the same way again! Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this with #TriumphantTales, hope to see you again on Tuesday!
