Tips to nurture your child’s curiosity
Curiosity is well known for driving individuals to learn new things and move out of comfort zones. It is also an attribute that is necessary when it comes to education. As grownups, there are many methods that can be used to stimulate curiosity, however, it is important to encourage it from as early on as possible. Children are born curious and are always looking for new ways to explore and discover. A child getting into a mess in the garden whilst looking for worms? That’s curiosity. As a parent, there are many things that you can do to encourage it in your child. Here is some advice from this private school in Kensington on how to nurture your child’s curiosity.
Change their routine in small, interesting ways
As always, it is important that children have a set daily routine. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t occasionally make a few changes here and there. Small changes can stimulate your child’s brain to think in different ways. For example, you could change the pasta shapes they are used to, for something different. Not only does this make dinner time a little more exciting, but your child will have the chance to discover the new texture and shape, and determine which one they prefer.
Read (or make up) open-ended stories together
Reading is one of the easiest ways to encourage curiosity in a child. You may be in a routine of reading the same three books every night before bed. However, reading the same books can become repetitive and lead to your child showing no interest. To make it more interesting, make up your own stories and let them use their imagination to finish it. You can change it up sometimes by giving them a story title and letting them tell the tale. You will be surprised with what they come up with!
Do science experiments
Science is a great way of understanding the world around us – how things work, why things occur in a certain way or at a certain time. However, when a child actually visualises it as opposed to just reading about it, it sparks their curiosity and encourages them to ask more questions and investigate further. Try these simple science experiments that kids can even do at home.
Spend time in nature
Go out for walks with your child. Explore the countryside. Observe the plants and insects around you. Nature has a lot to teach and can spark both curiosity and imagination in your child.
