London’s top family staycation ideas

Over the last few years, especially owing to Covid and the lack of international travel, we have really taken to having a great family holiday almost on our own doorsteps. Removing the hassle and environmental impact of a flight, and just rocking down to London, is more fun than you think! Here are a few staycation spots in London that you could consider for 2022.

Set your watches in Greenwich

From central London, you can jump on a river cruiser and head to the east of the capital. Within minutes you’ve travelled from the hustle and bustle of central London into the relaxed green pastures of Greenwich. 

The Royal Park houses many museums but even just a walk up the hill to the Observatory is a lovely afternoon well spent.  The whole of the country base their clocks on the chimes of the Royal Observatory and if you’re here for 1pm, you’ll see the famous ball drop.  

Plan a night at the theatre

London is home to one of the best theatre scenes in the world. Even if you turn up at the last minute, you are bound to find an award-winning production within minutes of Covent Garden. 

Wicked, Back to the Future, Lion King, the list is endless. All award winning and all just minutes’ walk from your doorstep. The London apartments short stay options are great around Covent Garden. Being able to walk out the front door and walk straight into the Theatre District removes the worries of finding your way back late at night.

Step back into a slice of history

The Tower of London dominates the Thames’ river front. A few steps away from Tower Bridge, you can walk in the footsteps of King Henry VIII and explore the castle which once ruled England. Stroll the gardens which have housed elephants, zebras and giraffes. See the jousting which once entertained Kings and Queens from all over Europe. Then head to the Tower and see the real Crown Jewels. 

The Tower of London is an iconic destination for any London tourist. Plan to spend at least half a day here, and if you have the time, go for a full one.

Explore the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is another iconic destination for a great day out in London. For every parent, it represents a whole day’s entertainment for any child. For an adult, it is a great day out learning all the things you have forgotten about since you left school. The interactive displays will keep you engaged beyond lunch, then when you need a break, head to the Mineralogy collection. This is a vast array of over half a million rocks, meteorites, gems and crystals.
