How to help your child find their passion

Young children are impressionable, which likely stems from the fact they are yet to develop their sense of self. Taking this into consideration, as a parent, you can help them figure out what inspires them so that they can choose how they want to spend their time without following the crowd. Here are some tips from a boarding school in Wiltshire.

1. Provide your child with new experiences

If your child sticks to the same old routine day in and day out, they will struggle to find new interests and passions. With that said, try and expose your child to new experiences on a regular basis so that they can figure out what interests and inspires them. Encourage them to join extra-curricular clubs, take them to new places, and ask them to help you with tasks you might normally do on your own, like cooking or gardening. 

2. Let your child be ‘bored’ sometimes…

Most parents hear their child groan “I’m booooored” at some point of time, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Boredom can encourage children to put their imagination to good use and come up with creative ways to entertain themselves. As a result, they might discover a hidden talent or something they’re passionate about. 

3. Talk about different careers

Find time to chat to your child about the different types of jobs that might be available to them when they’re older. If possible, you could even take them along to your work once in a while. Having these conversations and exposing your child to different kinds of jobs and work might help them figure out some of their own interests. They might even realise what they definitely don’t want to do for a career, which is equally as important for their development. 

4. Take them shopping

Next time you go on a shopping spree, take your child along and pay attention to the things they are drawn to. They might be interested in fashion or technology, board games or Lego. Essentially, this will reveal some of the things they enjoy, which you could then encourage at home.
