6 handy tips to cope with household disasters
Finishing the process of buying your first home is always exciting. You finally have a place you can call your own, and you can decorate it however you please. But, now that you own the property, you are responsible for keeping it in excellent condition. This means staying on top of repairs and problems that could be expensive if you leave them for too long.
Household disasters can happen to anyone, though, even if you work hard to keep your home as pristine and orderly as possible. Whenever these disasters strike, you can panic and feel lost. This won’t do your home any favours, though, so here are six ways you can cope with household disasters.
1. Act fast
No matter what has happened, the first thing you need to do is act fast. There is no use in waiting around to see what happens next because this could make things even worse and cause severe damage to your property, and probably even other properties surrounding you.
You should have a disaster plan in place so you know the next step, so whether it’s a leak, power cut, or something else, remember to follow this plan as closely as possible.
2. Understand how to reduce further damage
There will always be a chance that the damage could get worse, so you’ll need to understand what you must do to prevent this. If there is a leak in your home, knowing where your stop tap is will immediately stop the water supply and will prevent more water from getting into the property. You can also put buckets out to catch water and stop it from soaking through the carpets.
If something has broken, secure the area and remove items that could also break, such as plates or glasses. These are just some examples and focus mainly on extreme problems. However, you could encounter stains and spills, too, so have a plan for overcoming these problems also.
3. Know who to call
There are plenty of services available that can come to assist you in an emergency. When you move in, you should have written out a list of the most reliable companies in the area who are experts in preventing damage to your home and making emergency repairs, so get on the phone with them as soon as possible.
Even if it’s not an emergency, you can book appointments early. Searching for the best pest control services in town, for example, will prevent infestations from getting worse. Some services may even offer advice to keep things safe while you wait for them to arrive.
4. Or Fix It Yourself
Of course, there are some common household repairs that you can fix yourself, especially if you catch the issue early. These fixes usually include simple patching up on drywall or reattaching shelves to walls.
Any washing machine leaks are easy enough to solve, too, even if they don’t seem that way at first. As long as you’ve turned the water off, you can drain the leftover water inside the machine safely without the risk of causing further damage to the floors and other parts of the property.
5. Get the kids and pets out of the way
While you may be in panic mode, your kids and pets might be getting excited with all the commotion. Depending on the severity of the disaster, you should get them out of the way and keep them out of the way. Close the doors to isolate yourself along with the disaster and distract everyone else by putting on the TV or playing games.
The sooner they are out of the way, the fewer distractions you will need to deal with, which will allow you to solve the problem with a clear mind.
6. Keep an eye on it
Even after the problem is fixed, you should still monitor it to make sure that any repairs or adjustments have remained in place. If you’ve made the repairs yourself, there is a risk that your inexperience has made the job insufficient, and this can also occur with professionals doing a half-baked job.
As long as you keep an eye on the repair, you can catch any issues as soon as they occur again, and this will put you in the best position to prevent substantial damage and solve the problem quickly.
