Having trouble getting pregnant? Then read on…

How long does it take to get pregnant? Well, there’s no definitive answer to this question because every woman has a unique set of biological and physiological factors which contribute to how long she needs to try to conceive, and how easy or difficult it will be for her to do so. There are a number of factors which can contribute to a fast or slow conception:

  • Age
  • Health
  • Reproductive health
  • How often you have sex

In general, some women will have no issues at all conceiving whilst others may take a little longer. It can be a cause of worry for many couples but the variation is normal.

How often is considered regular sex?

Having regular sex may be considered as having sex every 2 or 3 days through a month. Some couples try to time sexual activity to coincide with ovulation. This can be a stressful way to manage things though and can cause a lot of worry.

Fertility

In general, most couples will conceive within 12 months if they are having regular sex with no contraception.

Studies have found that 92% of women aged between 19 and 26 who have regular sex will conceive within a year. But women do become less fertile with age – 82% of women aged between 35 and 38 will conceive after a year of trying.

Fertility problems

About 1 in 7 couples in the UK come up against fertility problems and these can be caused by a wide variety of issues including:

  • Disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Obesity or excessive exercise
  • Infections or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Male infertility including poor quality sperm and male impotence

The most common causes of infertility are failure to ovulate and sperm disorders.

Sometimes, there’s no explanation for infertility. This is found to be a factor in around 25% of couples who cannot conceive.

The good news however is that there’s lots of specialist help available. Many couples choose to visit somewhere like this private fertility clinic in London where tests can be arranged and a plan for treatment can be formed.

If you are experiencing unexplained problems conceiving, seek help as soon as possible so that you limit the amount of time wasted and gain practical support.
