5 tips to help boost your child’s self esteem
Self-esteem is something every parent should aspire to help build in their child. The compliments given when your child does well or achieves something that they’ve been working hard towards leads to a boost in their self-esteem. Helping your child feel good about themselves will allow them to build confidence to take on more challenges in life. Here are 5 tips advised by a private school in Esher on how to boost your child’s self-esteem.
1. There’s a thin line between praising and overpraising your child
Of course, as a parent you always try and praise your child for every little thing they do to show love. However, overpraising your child can do more harm than good. Your child needs to be competent in order to become great at things which takes time and effort. If you are telling your child that they are already doing a fantastic job, you are indirectly telling them that there is no need to push themselves any further.
2. But do offer praise when it’s due
However, do praise your child when appropriate and deserved – it is a valuable way to help build self-esteem in your child.
3. Allow them to make their own (age-appropriate) choices
Children that have the opportunity to make age-appropriate decisions for themselves, develop a feeling of empowerment and independence. Once they have reached an age of understanding, give them control over their own body as it teaches them a sense of responsibility for the choices that they make.
4. Get them to help around the house
Doing small chores on a regular basis will help your child demonstrate their competence and in turn, feel a boost in their self-esteem due to their contribution to the house.
5. Remind them that your love is unconditional
Remind your child that no matter what happens, your love for them will never diminish and you will always be there to help them back up again.
