Teaching your child the importance of respecting school rules

Respecting school rules – whether it’s at a co-educational public school, a private boys school, or a Catholic girls school – is critical to a child’s development. Not only will they fall behind otherwise, but they won’t be in their teacher’s good books either. Here are some simple tips to teach your child how to follow school rules.

1. Set a good example

Children pick up a lot of skills from their own parents. If there’s space for your child to learn then it will be from you, who should be providing a good example for them to follow. Your child is going to look to you as a role model, so it’s important that you provide them with the tools to be a valued member of society.

2. Curb out poor behaviour

Bad behaviour that isn’t controlled will only continue to get worse. Show your child that behaving in a bad way is only going to make things more difficult for them both inside and outside of school. Be firm but fair when it comes to directing your child to be a more well-behaved student.

3. Encourage your child to appreciate what they learn

Show your child the biggest benefits of going to school. Ask them what they’re learning about each week and how it will give them the tools to grow. Learning should feel fun and engaging, which is why reminding your child of that will make them aware of school rules and understand why they’re there.

4. Teach your child about respect in all areas of life

Being respectful is essential to a child’s development. It doesn’t just remind them of how to follow rules, it also gives them an understanding of what they need to do to be a benefit to the school they’re in. Respect will give them a lot of ways to progress in life, so teaching them how to be respectful early on will greatly help them with their studies in school.
