Being able to work as part of a team is an important life skill and something children should learn to do from an early age. A lot of their time at school involves collaborative work, and various extra-curricular activities also require strong social skills, so teaching your child to be a good team player should be on top of your list. If you’re unsure where to start, here are some tips from a prep school in Sussex.

1. Teach respect

Teamwork is all about respecting other people within a group. With that said, be sure to teach your child to respect others, regardless of their age, gender, race, or anything else that makes them different. This means acknowledging someone else’s ideas or opinions, even if they don’t align with your child’s, as well as being polite and compassionate.

2. Encourage team-based activities and board games

Your child will become a better team player if they have opportunities to practise the same. With that said, why not encourage your child to pick up a team-based hobby, like football or choir? Even drama club will give your child the chance to understand the importance of collaboration.

There are also plenty of board games you could play with your child that encourage good sportsmanship. Playing games where there is a winner and a loser will help your child understand that it’s taking part that counts.

3. Stick to the rules

Being a team player means sticking to the rules. For instance, if their football coach has asked everyone to meet at a certain time, your child should be punctual to show that they are a dependable member of the team. Someone who lies or cheats is not a good team player.

4. Praise co-operation

Whenever you notice your child behaving in a way that demonstrates teamwork, like sharing their toys, taking turns, helping a friend, or joining in, be sure to praise them. This will help them understand that this behaviour is favourable, and they will be more inclined to do it again.
