How to encourage good study habits in your child
It’s vital that children commit time and effort to their homework as much of their progress at school is not down to their teachers but themselves. While it’s their teacher’s duty to equip them with knowledge and help them in understanding concepts, they will need to complete work at home in order to memorise and become familiar with them. However, it’s not an easy thing to get them to do as there are many other things that they would much rather spend their time doing. If you’re a parent that knows the struggles, we have some tips on encouraging good study habits below.
1. Have structure
Structure is important for children as it provides a sense of security and normality. When you have a good routine in place, children are much more compliant and willing to do their homework as it’s what they are used to. If on the other hand, they have a lack of structure in their lives and are used to playing games all day, it will be much harder for them to sit down and do their homework. This is something that you can develop by setting limits and rewards. Homework is a must and if they want any of their luxuries, remind them that it has to be completed first.
2. Create a routine together
It’s also important to make sure that your expectations are realistic as setting aside long periods of time may be unattainable and burn them out. Times are just as important. If you involve your child in this process and decide on a set time that they will do their homework, they will be more likely to do it.
3. Self study
Just because you’re a parent or at the peak of your career doesn’t mean that you’re done learning. There are always things that we can improve on to grow, whether that be for professional reasons or just for fun. Demonstrating this can help your child to adopt a similar mindset as children look up to their parents.
