Dog Injury 101: How to take care of your injured dog?
You might think keeping a pet is an easy journey, but there are several ups and downs. Your pets could fall sick, get injured, or develop a dangerous disease. In all these conditions, pet owners have to be extra careful.
It’s not wrong to say that your furry friends require more attention than an average human being, especially canines. Dogs love running around and playing with everything in your home. Thus the chances of them getting harmed are higher.
Dogs could hurt their legs or arms or any other body part. However, that doesn’t mean you bound them to a room. It won’t be a healthy idea. Just know the following methods if your dog gets injured in any instance.
You don’t need to panic because there are several ways to treat their injury and bring them back into shape.
Assess the Situation and Damage
Seeing your dog harmed or in pain is not a sweet sight, but one shouldn’t lose their senses. If you lose your calm, you make the situation worse. Therefore, instead of panicking, assess the damage.
For example, if your dog fell down a flight of stairs or hit himself against a wall, try to calm them down. Injured dogs are much more aggressive because of all the pain, so start by relaxing them. Once they settle down, see how badly they are injured and if they require a vet.
If you know where your pets are hurt, you can choose a treatment plan. In case your mutt is bleeding, get a towel and wrap it around him to temporarily stop the blood. Afterward, you could take them to a specialist who would judge whether your pet needs medicines, dog leg braces, bandaging, or something else.
Provide CPR if Needed
Another treatment to immediately give to your injured dog is CPR if they have trouble breathing. However, before giving CPR, see whether your pet requires one. One should provide CPR only if their pet has stopped breathing.
You would be able to spot breathing issues through common signs like bluish gums or unresponsive behavior. A dog experiencing respiratory issues becomes unconscious with dilated pupils. If pet owners feel their mutt has a similar condition, immediately start with CPR.
Start by laying down your dog on a flat surface and checking his airway. If an object is blocking the airway, remove it using your fingers. The next step is to provide oxygen from your mouth through the pup’s nostrils. Try giving chest compressions as well to increase the chances of your pet’s survival.
The earlier you give CPR, the higher the chances of saving your pet.
Visit a Vet Regularly
Some injuries are not easy to handle on your own. You will need a vet in such circumstances. It’s better to drive to a vet, the minute your pet gets injured. They could take a better look, perform x-rays and prescribe proper medication.
Still, it doesn’t mean a single visit to the vet is enough. You will need to keep on visiting your vet from time to time. At any hour, if your pet’s pain increases or their behavior seems abnormal, call the vet and have a detailed discussion. They will provide better guidance on how to handle the problem.
In addition to these things, don’t forget that your pet will need follow-up checkups for quite some while. So, find a good vet in the area for your dog.
Opt for Physical Therapy
If your pet is paralyzed, it won’t be able to walk or run for some time. The recovery time could be weeks or months. In such conditions, your pet needs professional assistance to help them stay healthy.
Take your injured pet to a physiotherapist or physical therapy. These professionals recommend easy-to-do exercises that keep your puppy healthy and happy. Pets who have no movement throughout their recovery time suffer later on.
Thus, never ignore the need for therapy. It would increase the flexibility and strength of your pet’s bones.
Protect from Further Infections and Damage
Most importantly, pet owners must make sure their dogs don’t develop an infection while suffering from an injury. Often dogs who have injured their legs are prescribed bed rest, and this leads to urinary tract infections or bladder issues. It would further create problems for the pet, so keep them well-hydrated.
If your mutt is wearing a diaper, keep a check on it and change it when it’s full. Delaying a diaper change increases the chances of developing a UTI. And, if you notice any signs of a urinary tract infection, such as frequent urination or discomfort, don’t wait; schedule a vet appointment as soon as possible. Prompt action is key to preventing further issues and ensuring your furry friend stays healthy and comfortable.
Similarly, you must protect your dog from skin damage. Keep dogs in a drag bag to prevent your pet from scratching their skin. At times, dogs develop sores on their body due to scratching. Owners must keep a tight check to ensure nothing wrong with the pet’s skin or coat.
Keep a Check on the Dog’s Diet
Since your pet is sick, you should be extra careful about their meals. The better the quality of food, the quicker your pet’s injuries heal. After all dog food has various nutrients which help with the healing process.
Provide them with loads of fruits and vegetables. These items are easy to digest and have massive nutritional benefits. If possible, consult a vet and prepare a proper diet plan. Remember, your dog needs good food during this difficult time.
