6 ways to encourage your child to be the best version of themselves
Your children are the most important thing in your life, and being there for them is what you sign up for when you decide to become parents. And this is a responsibility you’ve got to take seriously, else they are going to lack the guidance they need to make it through life.
Something that you should always be doing is encouraging your children to always be the best version of themselves, but how exactly do you do that? Here are six ways you can help, guide and support them.
1. Give them a good education
The first thing that you should be focusing on is your child’s education. If you want them to become the best versions of themselves, then they need to be able to understand the world, and be able to read the things around them. We don’t necessarily mean that you need to push them to get straight A’s in school, as long as they are doing their best. Keep in mind that there are areas where you child will excel, and areas where they will not be so good, but this doesn’t make them any less smart. You’re not good at everything either, so you can’t hold the unrealistic expectation that your child will be.
We recommend that you start this journey early by reading to them from a young age. If you want to know about how to read to children to get the best results, then there are blog posts on this that you can take a look at. Educating them on the world around them is as important as meeting academic goals.
2. Teach them kindness
If you want your kids to be the best version of themselves, then you need to teach them about kindness. Kindness goes a long way in this world, and it is something that you should always be aiming for. Sadly, it is something that a lot of people lack, especially if the world has not been so kind to them. However, a rule that you should teach your kids is that when the world is treating you badly, try to treat it a little kinder than it is treating you. Even when things get tough, and it seems like nothing is going to be okay, you need to be kind.
Talk to your kids about kindness, and make sure that you practice what you preach. For example, talk to your kids about speaking to the child on the playground who is by themselves. In turn, try to talk to people who look like they could use a friend. It’s not always going to work out, but you know that you have shown kindness anyway, and the world needs more of that.
3. Show them how to be understanding
Another thing that you want your kids to practice is understanding, even when the situation makes no sense to them. We do not have to comprehend everything in this world fully to be able to show understanding towards people. Sometimes, people have views that we don’t fully get, and showing understanding does not mean that you have to agree with them. Sometimes, it means that you acknowledge that another person has a difference of opinion and you don’t try to change it. People are allowed to think differently from you and this is a lesson you need to pass on to your kids. By the same cloth, you need to show understanding to your kids. You might not always understand their decisions, or like them, but you need to let them make the choices themselves. They will reflect this into the world, and understanding will be a more common thing to experience.
4. Practice tolerance
Tolerance is different from understating. Tolerance is more about accepting people and the views that they have, even when they are different to your own. Understanding is different because you don’t need to accept anything, just acknowledge it. When it comes to tolerance, you need to show compassion, understanding as well as acceptance.
There are going to be many times in life where something doesn’t fit into the categories that you thought things did. There will also be many times where you are faced with things that you don’t agree with, or at the very least don’t understand, but that doesn’t make them wrong. Your opinion is not the end-all-and-be-all of the world, and this is an important thing for your children to learn. You need to teach your kids to accept everyone no matter what colour, gender, sexuality etc they are. Only when they practice tolerance will they really be the best version of themselves.
5. Don’t under-estimate the importance of self-love
Self love is the most important thing that you can teach your children. There is nobody in this world who is capable of loving you more than you, and sadly a lot of people do not love themselves. We live in a society that profits off of this, but it’s time for you to change that with your own children. Loving yourself is not a bad thing despite what you might be told in the media, and you should never let your children feel as though it is. Teach them to love themselves for what is on the inside, the kind and understanding person that you are raising.
6. Health is wealth
Finally, you should teach your kids about living a healthy and wholesome life. Teach them how to cook healthy meals, reiterate the importance of exercise, and let them feel free to talk about their problems in order to protect their mental health as well.
It is your job to ensure that your kids are healthy when they are younger, so that they can continue leading a healthy life when they grow up. You can’t be the best version of yourself if you are not in good health.
