Choosing the right car for your growing family

A car is an essential part of many modern families and households. You might need your vehicle for your daily work commute, to ferry your kids to and from school, to get groceries and sort other chores out, and to go on vacations and trips with your family. So, it makes sense to ensure that your vehicle is just right for you and your needs, especially if your family is continuing to grow.

Here are a few things to look out for when choosing a new family vehicle.

Space and comfort

Even though children tend not to take up much space on their own, they do often need more space than you’d expect. Interestingly, the smaller the child, the more space they might need. 

This is because car seats take up more space than the average adult, and babies and toddlers need secure car seats that will keep them safe and comfortable. You also need to consider more trunk space for buggies, prams, and bags for spare clothes, diapers, snacks, toys, and wipes. 

As your kids get older, this pile of supplies might be replaced with equipment for afterschool activities, and you always want older and larger children to be comfortable when in the back. So, if your kids are growing or your family is expecting an addition, a space upgrade might be in order.

New or used?

Unfortunately, cars don’t come cheap. One very popular way to save money is to get a used car rather than a brand-new one. However, used cars come with a discount for a reason.

While many used cars are almost as good as the newest model, you should pay attention to the history of the car. If it looks too good to be true, it sometimes is. Research the model of the car, as well as the logbook. Check for past issues, the mileage of the car, and any accidents. 

Safety features

On a similar note, you should look into the different safety features of the car. This is true whether it’s new or used. A family car should be practical rather than fun, so speed isn’t the important thing. Look for a car that can handle well and that brakes quickly when you need it.

Also, look for specific safety features. Automatic braking and parking sensors always come in handy, but when you have kids, you want a way to keep an eye on the backseat. Child locks are a must, and check that you know how to lock the door and the window. It’s also a good idea to have seatbelt sensors in the backseat.

Personalizing your car

Finally, once you have the practical stuff out of the way, you can focus on making your car feel like yours. Touches of decoration make it a nicer environment and things like decal stickers make your vehicle much easier to spot in a parking lot. 

Car seat covers, mats and a good quality car cover are also good ways to keep your car clean and in good condition.
