Fellow bloggers, mamas and well-wishers,
I’ve done it! I’ve finally taken the plunge and gone self-hosted. Yup, talesfrommamaville.wordpress.com is now talesfrommamaville.com!
I started this blog in January this year, and going self-hosted was the next step. The BIG step. (Not so big considering so many wonderful blogs and websites are self-hosted, but big for me because I’m techno-phobic). Which is why I put “go self-hosted” in my 2016 bucket-list and carried on blogging.
Till… December came along and stirred something in me. If it’s on my to-do list, well, then, it must be done! Besides, I keep reading about the benefits and wonders of going self-hosted; how you can customise your blog to reflect your ideas and vision and thoughts, and make your own little space on the world wide web. The world (wide web) can indeed become your oyster!
And, I admit, I’m loving it! I’ve not even discovered 20 per cent of what is there, and what can be done, but it is so liberating. To be able to change a font whenever you want, stylise a page as you wish and don’t even get me started on the plugins! Plugins are my newest favouriteist thing – well, online, at least!
The best part? It wasn’t that mind-boggling/ difficult/ scary for even a techno-phobe like me. Of course my web-hosting service provider did the main tech stuff and migrated the site for me, after which it was one big empty canvas for me to design as I wished. With help from fellow bloggers (a special shout out to Claire from Life, Love and Dirty Dishes who was very sweet and helpful, and her Blog Geek Tips series which provides some superb tips and articles on pretty much every aspect of blogging), support forums and a little bit of googling, I figured things out (and am still figuring out more). But the bottomline is, it’s do-able. And extremely rewarding.
And now that I’ve dived in, I’m also going to explore the possibility of making some dough from blogging by way of sponsored and collaborative posts, product reviews, brand representation and selling advertising space on the blog. Of course, keeping in mind my audience, the relevance of the brand to my readers and my writing conscience (no selling my soul and all that jazz!). If you are a brand, PR or another Mum Blogger and would like to work with me, do have a look at my Get in Touch/Work with Me page for further details.
So cheers to 2017 and new beginnings! I, for starters, now truly believe that I’ve got the whole world (wide web) in my hands! Well, almost! : – )
